Who makes the odds?
Las Vegas Sports Consultants Inc., establishes the odds for about 75% of the licensed Sports Books in Nevada, as well as for the Oregon State Lottery. It is run by Michael 'Roxy' Roxborough. He also operates as a consultant on gaming strategies, sports book management, marketing, and personnel. Most Books in and out of Nevada draw their odds from what is posted at the various Casinos. The Stardust Hotel and Casino is first to open the odds, and many a player line up to play against the "early" line. This is just the beginning of the line. From this point forward, as customers play on certain teams, the line is moved in half point increments until "equalizing action" comes in on the other team. Once relatively equal action is realized, the number remains relatively stable. The trick for the "shops" is to start with a number that will draw action on both sides. They do this to reduce there risk of getting "middled." Say for example the number starts at Nebraska by 21 over Iowa State. The first action in is all Nebraska, driving the line to 22, 23, 24, and finally to 28 before any interest in Iowa State comes in. If the line hits 28, what is to keep the same customer who played Nebraska at -21 to turn around and play Iowa State +28? If the final score is Nebraska by 22 thru 27, that customer wins BOTH sides and has "middled" the Casino (or store). It is rumoured that before the line goes out to the public, a very elite group of players from around the country get a shot at the opening numbers from the Stardust. Once the Stardust see's this action, it can adjust the line before putting it out to the public thereby lessening the possibility of being middled. In closing, the real answer to the above question, "Who makes the line" is simple - The PUBLIC makes the line, and don't ever let anybody else tell you differently!
